PETER HABELER RUNDE

25 - 30 HRS | 5 DAYS | 58.1 KM | 3.480 M | VALS - VALS

Are you seeking a high-altitude challenge that tests your endurance? Look no further than the Peter Habeler Runde, a 58.1-kilometer long classic hut-to-hut circuit named after the legendary Austrian mountaineer who first conquered Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. This is more than a 5-day trek; it’s an immersive, demanding loop around the majestic Olperer with 3.480m of elevation, designed to push the limits of any seasoned adventurer. Prepare to navigate black-graded mountain trails, cross technical high-alpine terrain, and experience the raw, untamed beauty of the western Zillertal Alps. The beauty of the Peter Habeler Runde lies in its demanding, yet rewarding structure, leading you across multiple scenic high-mountain passes and into two countries.

Alpine Ascent and glacial moraines

The journey begins in the quiet mountain village of Vals, leading you on a consistent, challenging climb up the valley. The initial miles serve as a crucial test of fitness through the forrest. When the landscape opens up it shows green valley views for the rugged, open terrain of the high mountains. Just underneath one of the granite mountain tops lays the Geraer Hütte. The route of the second day of this trips navigates over ancient glacial moraines and scree, showcasing the dynamic geological history of the Zillertal Alps. The route traverses challenging sections towards the Steinernes Lamm, providing spectacular views of the Olperer massif looming in the distance.

Reaching the Summit of the Route

The third day is arguably the most technical and demanding day, featuring the highest point of the entire Runde: the Friesenbergscharte (2.911 m). Definitely a big challenge when the weather predictions aren't good for the day. This is a black-graded section that can be impassable in bad weather so it is always good to know that it is possible to get around the peak through the valley with a bus. The route requires sure-footedness and proper alpine gear, with sections potentially requiring crossing snowfields early in the season. The route consists of a lot of rock fields and multiple sections with steel cables (also known as Via Ferrata). But on top you get unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding peaks from the Scharte, before descending to the Friesenberghaus overlooking the Friesenberg Lake.

The Famous Olperer Viewpoint

A shorter day focused on the dramatic landscape surrounding the mighty Olperer mountain. This stage connects you with the renowned Berliner Höhenweg for a brief period. Along the way to the Pfitscherjochhaus the route passes by the Olpererhütte with its famous Olperer Bridge above the Schlegeisspeicher reservoir that offers an incredible photo opportunity, framed by glaciers and peaks.

From the Olpererhütte the route takes you south, following high-alpine paths past glacier cuts and clear, cold mountain lakes. The ultimate highlight is crossing the international border between Austria and Italy at the Pfitscherjoch (Passo di Vizze). The Pfitscherjochhaus, or even the Landshuter Europa-Hütte (often an alternate stop), sits directly on the border, offering a unique opportunity to experience two distinct alpine cultures.

Long Descent Back to Vals

The final day is long, featuring one last climb to a high point before an extended descent back to the valley of Vals. This stage often involves linking up with the Landshuter Höhenweg and provides sweeping views as you leave the high-alpine environment behind. The trail changes from rugged boulder fields and scree back to green meadows and forests eventually leading to established paths as it descend to the starting point, concluding the circuit.

The Peter Habeler Runde is an essential high-alpine adventure for any serious hiker. It's a journey through the Zillertal's most spectacular landscapes, offering isolation, challenge, and the unforgettable reward of completing a true mountain circuit.
