Nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees, the hike to Pic de Comapedrosa, Andorra’s highest peak at 2,945 meters, is a must for adventurers seeking a challenging yet rewarding day hike. Starting and ending in the picturesque town of Arinsal, this 14.9 km round-trip trail showcases the grandeur of the Les Valls del Comapedrosa Natural Park, a protected area filled with rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.

Andorra's highest peak

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forests of birch, spruce, and fir. As you progress, you’ll traverse green valleys and pass cascading rivers, waterfalls, and scenic mountain lakes. This is Andorra at its most pristine, where every step immerses you deeper into nature. At around the halfway point, hikers will reach the Cabana de la Comapedrosa, a serene meadow offering spectacular views of the Arinsal Valley.

Here lies the Refugi de Comapedrosa, a mountain hut perfect for a short break or an overnight stay. Whether you’re recharging with a hearty meal or simply soaking in the tranquility, the refuge adds a comforting stop along this demanding hike.

Ascent to the summit

Beyond the meadow, the terrain grows steeper and more rugged, signaling the final push to the summit. As you approach Estany Negre, a tranquil mountain lake perched 200 meters below the peak, you’ll face a choice: a direct, challenging climb over rocky terrain or a slightly longer but gentler route skirting the lake.

The summit rewards hikers with an unparalleled panoramic view that spans Andorra, France, and Spain. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a Griffon Vulture soaring high above, a majestic symbol of the region.

Les Valls del Comapedrosa natural park
