The Prättigauer Höhenweg, or Prättigau high-Level trail, is a breathtaking 78.5 km mountain hike through the Alps of Graubünden, Switzerland. Starting in Klosters Dorf (or Klosters Platz train station) and ending in Landquart, this 4-day adventure combines spectacular views, cozy mountain huts, and the rugged beauty of the Rätikon mountain range which forms the geological border between the Eastern and Western Alps. With a total elevation gain of 3.030 meters, it offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for hiking enthusiasts.

Along the Rätikon Sandstone Cliffs

The trail’s name, “Höhenweg”, is well-deserved. It winds along mountain contours, offering incredible vistas of limestone cliffs and lush valleys. On one side, you’ll marvel at the dramatic rock faces of peaks like Schesaplana, Kirchlispitzen, and Drusenfluh, dotted with climbers tackling challenging routes. On the other side, wide and deep alpine views unfold, painting a perfect backdrop for each stage of the hike.

On the first day after a long climb hikers will be rewarded with amazing views on the summit of Jägglischhorn, offering panoramic views of the entire region, including the Prättigau Valley and surrounding alpine peaks. A real view over both Austria and Switzerland appears when hikers walk along the border of both countries along the Kirchlispitzen on the third day of the hike.

Graubünden mountain huts

Stay overnight at famous Graubünden mountain huts, Schesaplana and Carschina. Both of these huts provide traditional Swiss hospitality, hearty meals, and unbeatable views of the Rätikon range. Schesaplana means "smooth stone" which refers to the limestone mountains that aren't neccesarily smooth but crumbly. These can be seen from the hut. Between start and finish the trail transitions from high-altitude, where for example the Carschina hut is located, to meadows and rocky paths to serene forests and quaint alpine villages like Sankt Antönien, offering a mix of challenges and serene moments.
