THE VOLTZBERG

6 - 8 HRS | 15 KM | 240 M | COPPENAME RIVER - VOLTZBERG

Deep within the vast Amazon rainforest of Suriname lies the Voltzberg, a striking granite mountain rising 240 meters above the jungle canopy. This 15 km hike takes 6 - 8 hours to complete and offers adventurers a mix of challenge and natural beauty. The journey starts at the Coppename River and leads through dense rainforest in the Raleighvallen Nature Reserve, concluding with a climb to the Voltzberg summit.

Hiking in the Amazon jungle

The trail begins at the serene banks of the Coppename River, winding through lush jungle paths surrounded by towering trees and diverse wildlife. Along the way, hikers may spot tropical birds, monkeys, and other native species that thrive in the protected reserve. The dense vegetation eventually gives way to the rocky ascent of the Voltzberg, a bare granite outcrop shaped over millennia.

The climb itself is steep and demanding, involving rope-assisted sections, particularly tricky during the rainy season. However, the effort is rewarded at the top with panoramic views of the Amazon rainforest, stretching endlessly in every direction. This unique vantage point offers a rare glimpse of the jungle from above, making it an unforgettable highlight of the hike.

Refresh and recharge

After descending from the summit, hikers can cool off under a small waterfall near the trail’s end, a refreshing treat after a day of trekking. Many trips to Voltzberg also include a visit to the nearby Raleigh Falls, the largest set of rapids in the reserve, providing a tranquil spot to relax and recover.
